Programs
American Legion Auxiliary Hawaiʻi Girls State
Hawaiʻi Girls State is a nationally based summer leadership program for rising high school seniors grounded in civics, teamwork, advocacy, consensus building, and respect. The program’s purpose is to provide an outstanding, unique, and coveted educational opportunity for young women that instills the basic ideals and principles of American government. The program serves as a platform for discovering the students’ voices of empowerment, honing advocacy skills, and fostering fresh perspectives on the duties of social justice.
Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders Fellows Program
The Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders Fellows Program is a year-long advanced leadership program to empower future state-level leaders for Hawaii, who are both world-class and local. Cohorts are composed of 20 select high school seniors from both public and private schools, representing the diversity of Hawaiʻi’s communities. The program trains young leaders to be people of character, strong critical thinkers, caretakers of Hawaiʻi, and courageous change-makers.
Courts in the Community Program
The Courts in the Community Program is an educational outreach program of the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court that brings the full, five-member court to high schools throughout the state to hear oral arguments in an actual case. Prior to the court convening on campus, students learn about the judicial system and the appellate process using a curriculum developed by the Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center and the Students for Public Outreach and Civic Education of the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa’s William S. Richardson School of Law. Students also participate in a moot court exercise based on the case that will be argued on campus.
Hawaiʻi History Day
Hawaiʻi History Day is coordinated by the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities. It is a year-long history education program that invigorates the teaching and learning of history in grades 4-12. It promotes a theme-based, research-centered model for history and civics education.
Hawaiʻi State 4-H Program
The Hawaiʻi State 4-H Program is a University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa Extension program. 4‑H civic engagement programs empower young people to be well-informed citizens actively engaged in their communities and the world. Youth learn about civic affairs, build decision-making skills, and develop a sense of understanding and confidence in relating and connecting with others.
High School Mock Trial Program
The High School Mock Trial Program is coordinated by the Young Lawyers Division of the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association. During the program, volunteer attorneys coach high school mock trial teams as they prepare to take a case from start to finish. The program culminates in mock trial competitions between schools and a State Championship at the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court. The winning team is eligible to compete in the National High School Mock Trial Championships.
Junior Judges
Junior Judges is a program coordinated by the Young Lawyers Division of the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association. The program brings volunteer attorneys into third, fourth, and fifth-grade classrooms statewide to help students think about the challenges they face each day and how they can make ethical decisions when “feeling the pressure.”
Law Week
Each year during Law Week, the Young Lawyers Division of the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association provides free legal information via virtual and in-person legal clinics across the state.
Legal Lines
Legal Lines is a program coordinated by the Young Lawyers Division of the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association. Through this program, volunteer attorneys provide free legal information to the public. This one-hour weekly program—each Wednesday from 6:00–7:00 p.m.—assists members of the public who may not have access to an attorney and need general advice or just want to be pointed in the right direction to get information.
Richardson Law & Justice Academy
The Richardson Law & Justice Academy is a program of the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law. The program is an intensive one-week summer program for high school students interested in justice, the law, and careers in the legal field. The program aims to introduce high school students to issues of law and justice, build students’ skills in discussion, research, debate, analysis, and advocacy, and provide tools and inspiration to become active and involved citizens of their communities.
