Civic Engagement at West Oʻahu
An event titled “Laws Make a Difference, and So Can You” was held at the University of Hawaiʻi West Oʻahu on March 27, organized by the PACE Commission and the Hawaiʻi Library Association. The event aimed to educate the public on the structure of the U.S. government, the impact of laws, and the significance of citizen participation in a democracy. State Law Librarian Jenny Silbiger explained the three branches of government and used same-sex marriage as an example of how laws and court decisions at different levels have shaped an issue. A panel featuring retired Judges Gary Chang and Jeffrey Crabtree and former State Senator Maile Shimabukuro answered questions from attendees. Judge Chang emphasized the importance of being educated about threats to democracy and making informed voting choices, highlighting the rule of law as crucial. Judge Crabtree stressed the value of fulfilling jury duty. Senator Shimabukuro underscored the impact of voting, recalling her close election victory. Overall, the event encouraged active civic engagement as a means for individuals to make a difference.
